“Bought and Sold in NYC”

( or “I might as well be living in fucking Venezuela”)

From the NYT, November 1, 2009: “As their aides fretted over the prospect of low turnout at the polls, the candidates for New York City mayor delivered last-minute appeals to voters on Sunday, with Comptroller William C. Thompson Jr. urging New Yorkers to reject an incumbent “who thinks he’s above democracy,” and Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg asking for a third term to “keep making progress.”

Well, that about says it all, doesn’t it? Tomorrow’s mayoral election has officially been bought by Mike Bloomberg. I suspect he also paid for his opponent, City Comptroller and raging Obot William Thompson whose only appeal is that he’s not Bloomberg.

Thompson’s lemming-like response last week when asked if President Obama had done enough for gay rights was the nail in his coffin (He said “Yes!  The POTUS inherited so many problems from George Bush, and I think he’s doing a wonderful job!) Stupid remark, since the LGBT community in NYC is a huge voting bloc.

(surprise bonus video about that at the end of this post)

Come to Caracas!

Friends ask: “How do you not lose your mind in the face of this? I answer: “Simple.  I just pretend I’m living in sunny Venezuela, where the dictator votes for you so you don’t have to bother”

There’s another bombshell on the NYC ballot that I’ll get to later, but right now, lets see what else is going on in the ‘hood… So, its off to the polls we go, pretending that we still live in America

“Over the river and through the woods…”

Elsewhere, ‘The Kenyan’ is doing his best to force his will all over the place, somehow not realizing that his support is the kiss of death.  Witness what’s happening across the Hudson in sister state, New Jersey, where nobody takes any shit from anyone:

obama

The Kenyan mingles with Corzine supporter in The Garden State

Despite outspending his opponent 3 to 1, Corzine is still in a neck-and-neck horse race with Christie, the GOP candidate that nobody really knows about, and Daggett, the allegedly Independent candidate who was hand picked by the Dems (and nobody really cares about).

When asked to comment about Corzine, The POTUS had this to say:

CAMDEN, N.J. — In a final campaign swing on behalf of the only governor seeking re-election this fall, President Barack Obama on Sunday pitched Democratic Gov. Jon Corzine’s bid as a key component for the White House to make good on its political promises.

“He’s one of the best partners I have in the White House. We work together,” Obama said. “We know our work is far from over.”

An energized Obama told 3,500 people at a rally in Camden that they need to work hard to give Corzine another term in office so he can work with Washington to help repair a brittle economy. A Corzine loss would be seen as a political embarrassment for the White House.

So, how about that, New Jersey residents? You don’t want to embarrass your President, do you?  If you do, just use common sense and don’t fall prey to political machinations.

You will most likely come to be known as the most  racist state north of the Mason/Dixon line, but at least you’ll have a Governor who will listen to you.

Back in New York, we have another bombshell!

fire55Checking to see what might be interesting down ticket on the NYC ballot, I discovered a name that seemed familiar to me. Joshua Goldberg is running for Gale Brewer’s District City Council seat.  Turns out I met him years ago at a local pub on Amsterdam Avenue called “The Snug” (now known as “The Dead Poet”).  He was nice enough, but a little skittish.

Racking my brain, I recalled much lamenting about, of all things, his sibling rivalry with his brother who was considered “The Golden Child” by their mother (We see this same phenomenon in the Emanuel household, where Rham’s own mother calls him “my least successful child”).  I felt for Josh.  He’s a really nice guy, and it sounded like he got a raw deal.  Why does this matter at all?  I finally found out who his brother and mother are:

“Joshua Goldberg, the brother of conservative columnist Jonah Goldberg, is running for the Sixth District City Council seat currently held by Gale Brewer. Goldberg, whose candidacy was endorsed by the New York County Republican Party screening committee, has worked as a tour guide, and has also been a fishmonger and worked in the media. He is 42 and has never before run for political office.

His family has impressive conservative credentials. Joshua’s brother Jonah is one of the country’s best-known conservative columnists, an editor-at-large of National Review Online, and a Fox News contributor. His mother Lucianne Goldberg, a literary agent, was a prominent figure in the Monica Lewinsky scandal, counseling Linda Tripp to tape her conversations with Lewinsky. A New York Times article from 1998 said she had a “a taste for right-wing, tell-all attack books.” She told the Times, however, that she is an independent, not a Republican.”

Josh is far too likable to suffer for “the sins of his mother” (unlike his toxic brother Jonah, whom I would throw under the bus in a New York minute),  but somehow I just can’t qualify pulling that lever because of a few long ago conversations.

More importantly, how the hell does one find work as a fishmonger in Manhattan? That conjures up images of Rahm Emanuel sending dead fish to his enemies, and that image alone is far too close for comfort.  Not to mention that any friend of Linda Tripp is just too nuts to trust. Nice guy or not, there may be a little too much family baggage to make me comfortable enough to vote for him. Gotta run, guys. Time to get back to ‘the Caracas within’ before I totally lose it.

The lesson here:

Never take anything for granted. For those of you who think that New York City is just one big pile of KoolAid swilling liberals, check this out from the Halloween Parade this past weekend:

I’m going to forward this to everyone I know. Many of us in Manhattan feel the same, since there is no ‘lesser of two evils” to vote for.

One interesting fact I found today is that in spite of spending upwards of $100M on his campaign, Michael Bloomberg’s lead is still shrinking rapidly.

Since he already had his illegal third term sewn up, that $100 Million would have been better spent on NYC education, or allocated to help the poor (which are becoming more and more numerous in middle class neighborhoods in NYC).

As long as ACORN or some other scam group wasn’t involved, this would have been preferable to this blatantly and obviously pre-determined “election”

Oh my…how the hell do you vote? This is just awful.

How many ACORN, Project Vote groups are still active?

I answer: “Simple. I just pretend I’m living in sunny Venezuela, where the dictator votes for you so you don’t have to bother”

One presumes the claim that Chavez is a dictator stems from the term limits issue? Even though I’m not a fan (he is not near environmental enough nor interested in improving women’s rights and has not done enough to fight crime), the claim that he is a dictator is absurd.
Chavez is the twice democratically elected president (63% and 61% respectively) of Venezuela; both elections were certified as fair by international observers. The elimination of term limits was put to both referendum and vote 2 times under Chavez: it failed the first time and passed the 2nd time at 54% with over 70% of eligible voters voting. His most recent referendum of socialist reforms failed at 49% vs 51% of the vote. http://www.democracynow.org/2007/12/17/a_debate_on_hugo_chavez_and

One might note that our democratic ally of Germany also has repealed term limits for the Chancellor, as has Columbia for its president, under our pal Uribe. Nor does India have term limits for its pm, or Italy for its president, nor do the pms of the UK, Australia, or Canada have term limits. Nor does Israel have term limits. (In Israel, “Party members are elected or appointed to their party’s Knesset list and are not limited in the number of Knesset terms they may serve. Since the Prime Minister is not directly elected, but is the head of his/her party, they can serve multiple terms as long as they remain the head of their party and the party forms the government.”) In short, most of our bestest world allies don’t have term limits, yet there is no great movement in the blogosphere to state that these are dictatorships.
The seeming premise that left wing democratic governments without term limits in SA/CA must be dictatorships as opposed to all our right wing allied governments without term limits is particularly ironic, since the left wing democratic governments developed in response to the ACTUAL DICTATORSHIPS installed by our and Russia’s militaries that preceded them.

“The elimination of term limits was put to both referendum and vote 2 times under Chavez:”

The elimination of term limits was also put to both referendum and vote 2 times under Bloomberg here in NYC. It was NOT passed either time, and thats more indicative of dictatorship than Chavez.

Sorry if I hit a nerve re: Chavez, Nom, but he has been characterized as a dictator in the MSM for years, which makes a fair comparison for most readers (who are obviously not as well versed as you are on this).

Personally, I picked Caracas because of its topography as well as my penchant for leaving the country for a while when I’ve had enough (I spent the first 3 1/2 years of the Reagan presidency in the West Indies because of my lack of patience with bullshit)

I’m sure not arguing re-Bloomberg (or the rest of your sad voting options (our vote was a couple weeks ago, not any better))– he’s a pos– just with the false Chavez is a dictator meme.
That is a great cartoon btw.

    Hey Anthony,
It is nice to see you remembered me and are paying attention to my New York City Council race. The sibling rivalry is subsided and while I love my brother to death we don’t always see eye to eye politically.

Fellow Upper West Siders, remember that Gale Brewer, my incumbent opponenent voted to keep term limits twice and is yet runningFOR A THIRD TERM. She is also the driving force behind a shady deal to put a half-way house for convicted, addicted felons and sex-offienders on 94 Street and West End avenue in the middle of a family neighborhood.

Check out the campaign’s website at http://www.GoldbergForCouncil.com. Thanks folks and thank you Anthony.

      Dude!

Good to see you here, and good that you remember me as well. Thanks for having the balls to post.

I did not know that about Brewer, and now she’s in the same boat as anyone else who disrespects the people’s vote. And that house on 94th St – does she live nearby?

Thanks for posting the url for your campaign site.

I still stand pat on my feelings about Tripp, etc. but once again, your courage to walk into an article like this has given me pause for thought.

    • 2009 November 2

      btw, fishmonger? What? Please elaborate…

      • 2009 November 2

I used to work for a wholsale fish distributor. Up way before dawn to pick up fish at the Fulton Market and then to the shop to clean, cut and sort the fish and then off to deliver to restaurants and food services.

I know that the term ‘fishmonger’ conjures up images of some Dickensian character push a wheelbarrow down cobblestone streets, but it is apt.

I used to be able to filet half a dozen salmon in a little over three minutes.

BTW, I welcome all correspondence: ElectGoldberg@aol.com

Thanks again, Josh. Are you still on the UWS? or at least nearby The Dead Poet? It would be cool to meet up for cocktails again when you have some time.

Also, got a look at your site, and was most impressed with the “Issues” page http://www.goldbergforcouncil.com/Issues/

You might be closer to winning this than you think. So glad you stopped by to inform us further. Maybe the City Council slot will be the only one that I don’t submit a write in..

          Good luck!

    Josh-

That thread was getting ridiculously tiny. To continue, thats another really good page on your site. Thanks for posting it.

    http://www.GoldbergForCouncil.com/displaynews

mcnorman There are three links there that will answer your question about ACORN, which you posted above.

Also (to Josh) I may have been converted. I think you’re going to get my vote tomorrow. Im particularly disturbed at the arrogance with which Brewer is approaching the half-way house you mentioned.

btw, you have another fan in the neighborhood (Louise of ‘J.R and Louise’ fame) who originally informed me about your being on the ballot

Glad you like the site. Please don’t be a stranger.

I have posted the article you wrote on my news page. As you can see from the other articles I posted, I post anything I can find about the campaign whether it is flattering or not.

After this week, I will be a lot less busy and we can get together.

      • 2009 November 2

Thanks for the link. A good practice (posting all). Maybe you can convince “The Changeling” to do the same before we all go down the toilet?

As far as the tone of my post goes, I hope you found it as (personally) flattering as I intended; and I stand corrected on the effects of environmental conditioning (inherited or otherwise). As in my own circumstances, even though the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree, sometimes there’s a real peach that sneaks onto a branch.

I’m particularly delighted to see that an example of “The Lesson Here” (never take anything for granted) has been illustrated.

Hopefully, after this week you will be busy as hell doing Brewer’s job. And hopefully, you’ll also have time to meet. And drink. And be merry.

Again, best of luck to you tomorrow.

        • 2009 November 2

Please, don’t give it another thought. No one is 100% likable. I did find it flattering.

BTW, I am sure that if you met my brother and mom you would see they have many redeeming qualities. As I mentioned, politics is a blood sport and the players’ game faces can be quite scary. Then you meet them in the locker-room and realized that they are just big pussycats.
